He was known for his acerbic wit and vitriolic reviews and is one of the most quoted Americans of his generation (“I’m tired of hearing it said that democracy doesn’t work. Of course it doesn’t work. We are supposed to work it.” “The English have an extraordinary ability for flying into a great calm.”). Samuel Hopkins Adams (1871-1958) was an American investigative journalist best known for exposing public health injustices in the United States. Adams was also a prolific writer of fiction some published under a pseudonym because of its risqué content.
