By Lorna Hill
Published by: Evan's Brothers (1967)
Marie Taglioni was born in Stockholm in 1804 to an Italian choreographer father and Swedish ballet dancer mother. When young, Marie’s family moved to Vienna where she began her ballet training. Marie became one of the most celebrated ballerinas of her time, dancing at such prestigious houses as the Paris Opera Ballet, London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Imperial Ballet in St Petersburg. She is credited as being one of the first ballerinas to dance en pointe in La Sylphide, a ballet created for her by her father to showcase her talents. Following her retirement, she became involved with the reorganization of the ballet of the Paris Opera along more professional lines and was one of the judges of a new annual competition of the corps de ballet. Lorna Hill is an English writer, mostly of children’s books, many of which centre around the world of dance. She died in 1991.
