Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) was one of the most prolific British novelists of her time, publishing over 100 titles that sold millions. For many years she was the most borrowed author in UK public libraries. Cookson started writing relatively late in life with a view to helping her overcome mental health issues. Her first novel was published in 1950. In her writing, she drew inspiration from her deprived childhood in the North East of England. Cookson saw herself as a writer of historical novels describing people, places and conditions she knew.
