Ronald Colman (1891-1958) was an English actor who started his career in silent films and the theatre in Britain before emigrating to the United States. One of Colman’s main attributes was his voice which Encyclopaedia Britannica describes as a ‘resonant, mellifluous speaking voice with a unique, pleasing timber’. His voice earned him an appearance on the US National Broadcasting Company’s (NBC) D-Day programme on 6th June, 1944. On that day, Colman read “Poem and Prayer for an Invading Army” by Edna St Vincent Millay. It is said that Colman mirrored the image of the “stereotypical English gentleman”. In 1948, he won a Best Actor Oscar for A Double Life, a film noir directed by George Cukor. Juliet Benita Colman is the actor’s daughter.
