The Pilgrim’s Progress is a Christian allegory and was started by Bunyon, a puritan preacher, while imprisoned for holding religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. The book was hugely popular and appreciated for its plain literary style. It was swiftly translated into Dutch and German; the first American edition was published in 1681. The Pilgrim’s Progress has sometimes been called the first novel written and Bunyon and his work influenced many writers including Hogarth, C S Lewis, Dickens, Thackeray, Enid Blyton and many more.
