Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-1938) was an Italian poet, novelist and WWI war hero. At the height of his success, he was celebrated for the originality, power and decadence of his writing. Later, his literary reputation was and remains tarnished by his fascist associations. He was an ultra-nationalist and is widely seen as a precursor to the ideals and techniques of Italian fascism. As leader (Duce) of the Italian fascist movement, Mussolini copied many of d’Annunzio’s techniques. Anthony Rhodes (1916-2004) was a distinguished British writer of memoirs, novels, histories and travelogues.
