T E Hulme (1883-1917) was an English poet and critic. In 1909, Hulme published two poems that are at the origin of Imagism considered to be the first modernist poetry movement in the English language. Imagism favours precision of imagery and clear, sharp language. The Imagists were centred in London with members from Great Britain, Ireland and the United States. Unusually for the times, the movement included women poets (H.D, Amy Lowell). Ezra Pound, at the time working in London, was one of the major proponents of Imagism. Hulme died in action in West Flanders during WWI.
