This is the first novel of the crime writing duo Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac who were instrumental in creating a French crime writing subgenre with an emphasis on local settings and psychological suspense. Hitchcock’s?Vertigo?is based on a novel by the duo. Henri-Georges Clouzot based his film?Les Diaboliques?(1955) on the story, starring Simone Signoret. Hitchcock was also interested in the film rights of this book but Clouzot beat him to it. A Russian version was filmed in 1991 and a US version in 1996, starring Isabelle Adjani, Sharon Stone and Chazz Palminteri.?
